Hantavirus Outbreak at Cruise Ship Raises Global Alarm
The Dallas Morning News detailed a chronology of the hantavirus outbreak at a cruise ship, MV Hondius, in the May 8, 2026, edition. The cruise ship became the epicenter of one of the most dangerous outbreaks of hantavirus in recent memory as the vessel was sailing by various picturesque archipelagoes, atolls and islets on the northern edges of Antarctica. 
* The cruise ship began its trip at the southern port city of Ushuaia, Argentina on April 1, 2026.
* April 6, 2026: A 70-year-old Dutch man fell sick with fever, headache and mild diarrhea. The man and his wife were sightseeing in Ushuaia before boarding the cruise ship. According to WHO, the Dutch couple visited Chile too. Now, authorities suspect that the couple might have been infected before boarding the cruise ship. Hantavirus can spread through inhalation from contaminated rodent droppings. Although human-to-human infection is rare, but Andes strain of hantavirus can spread through humans. 
* April 11, 2026: The Dutch man developed respiratory problem and died on board. 
* April 15, 2026: Six additional people boarded on the ship at the remote Britain-ruled archipelago of Tristan da Cunha.
* April 24, 2026: The deceased Dutch man's body was disembarked in St. Helena, an island territory of U.K. His wife disembarked too as well as two dozens other cruise passengers. 
* April 25, 2026: The Dutch widow, who did start to show symptoms of illness, boarded a flight from St. Helena to South Africa. The flight carried 88 passengers and crew members.
* April 26, 2026: The Dutch woman collapsed at a South African airport as she was about to board a flight home.
* April 27, 2026: Meanwhile, a British man in MV Hondius, the sailing vessel of outbreak, got sick and he was evacuated to Ascension Island and subsequently moved to an ICU at a South African hospital. 
* April 28, 2026: A German woman fell sick on board as MV Hondius sailed towards the coast of Cape Verde. 
* May 2, 2026: The German woman died in ship, marking the third fatality. The test results for a British man admitted in the ICU at a South African hospital on April 27, 2026 returned positive for hantavirus, marking for the first time the virus as a probable cause for outbreak. 
* May 3, 2026: The World Health Organization announced that it was responding to medical crisis in MV Hondius as the luxury cruise ship entered the waters of Cape Verde. 
* May 4, 2026: The South African authorities made public that the deceased Dutch woman who had collapsed in the airport did posthumously test positive for hantavirus. WHO declared a hantavirus outbreak in the ship. 
* May 5, 2026: The cruise ship operator and the island of Cape Verde were in open difference on evacuation and disembarkation. 
* May 6, 2026: MV Hondius began to sail towards Canary Islands after the Spanish territory okayed the cruise ship to make a for evacuation of passengers. Three people were evacuated from the ship and flown to specialized hospitals in Europe. Two of them tested positive for hantavirus. Swiss authorities meanwhile announced positive hantavirus test result for a passenger who had disembarked in St. Helena, raising the total confirmed cases to five.
